West Bengal CM conducts aerial survey of cyclone-hit areas in South 24 Parganas

South 24 Parganas (West Bengal) [India], May 29 : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday conducted an aerial survey of the cyclone-affected areas in South 24 Parganas.
The cyclone Remal landfall process began at 8:30 pm on Sunday over the adjacent coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh between Sagar Island and Khepupara, near the southwest of Mongla in the neighbouring country.
'Remal' flattened fragile dwellings, uprooted trees and knocked down electric poles. The wind intensity of 110 to 120 kmph, gusting to 135 kmph. Visuals from outside the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday showed heavy rains and gusty winds lashing the capital city.
Earlier, the TMC Chairperson and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee declined to attend the INDI bloc meeting on June 1, stating that Cyclone relief was her current priority.
"The INDIA team is holding a meeting on June 1. I have told them I can't join as we have election on 10 seats in West Bengal on the same day. Punjab, Bihar & UP also have elections on June 1. On one side is the cyclone, and on the other side, it is elections - I have to do everything. Cyclone relief is my priority right now," she said.
Meanwhile, Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of Assam following the landfall on Sunday night of Cyclone Remal.
Flood-like situations have emerged in the Kampur area of the state's Nagaon district as excess water from the swollen Borpani River submerged several villages in the area.
A low-pressure area that was first observed on May 22 in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a more depressive system, now located in the North Bay of Bengal.
The primary regions affected are West Bengal, Coastal Bangladesh, Tripura and some other parts of north-eastern states. Residents in these areas, as well as in the neighbouring states, are urged to brace for adverse weather conditions starting from May 26.
