Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], March 21 : Sharing a key update amid the ongoing probe into the murder of two siblings in Badayun, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Thursday said the second accused, who managed to flee in the wake of the incident, was arrested.
Earlier, another accused opened fire on the police and was shot dead in retaliatory firing.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the deputy CM said, "We have sent out a clear message that whoever commits a crime can neither escape nor evade the law enforcers forever. Such person will neither find patronage or protection in the state. The police are doing their job."
Calling out the Samajwadi Party for 'policiticising' the incident while expressing regret over the manner of the killing of two minor siblings, Deputy CM Maurya said, "People across the state are sad and aggrieved over the killing of innocent children. However, what's more unfortunate is how the Samajwadi Party is trying to politicise the incident."
The two minor siblings were hacked to death on April 19 at their home allegedly by Sajid, a barber in the Baba colony of the western UP district, and his brother Javed. While the prime accused was shot dead in an exchange of fire with the police, the latter was reported absconding until he was arrested from Bareilly on the night of March 20, the deputy CM informed on Thursday.
In a video earlier, Javed was purportedly shown as saying, "I ran straight to Delhi (after the killings). However, I later came back to Bareilly to give myself up to the police. I received phone calls from people, who told me about what my brother did."
"I fled to Delhi to avoid the big crowds in Badayun. However, now I am back in Bareilly to surrender as I have recordings of multiple calls in which I was told that my brother committed murder. I don't know why he did this as we had a good relationship with that (the victims') family," Javed purportedly said in the video.
According to sources, some locals caught hold of him at a bus stand and handed him over to the police on Wednesday night.
Budayun Senior Superintendant of Police (SSP) Alok Priyadarshi said, "The second accused, Javed, who is the brother of prime accused Sajid, has been arrested by the district police. He gave himself up to the police after a video of his went viral. Our team is in the process of bringing him back (to Badayun). Further action will be taken after questioning him."
Briefing reporters earlier, Bareilly Inspector General Rakesh Kumar had said Sajid was killed in retaliatory firing after he opened fire on the police while trying to escape on March 20.
Meanwhile, Javed switched off his mobile and had fled to Delhi, the police informed.
