Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], September 5 : Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday said that women will have adequate representation in Parliament and State Assemblies with amendments to the Constitution soon which will make India "number one" even before 2047.
"I can tell you that the day is not far when in India, in the Parliament and State Assemblies, women will have adequate representation with appropriate amendments to the Constitution. We will be a global power by 2047 but if this reservation takes place early, we will be number 1 even before 2047...," Vice President Dhankar said while addressing an interactive program with the girl students of "Vishwavidyalaya Maharani Mahavidyalaya" in Rajasthan's Jaipur.
"As far as the Constitution is concerned, I want you girls to note - in Panchayats and Municipalities - in all elections girls and women have one-third reservation. This reservation is very significant," he added.
Vice President Dhankar questioned the word "Chairman" in the Constitution for not being gender inclusive.
"When our Constitution was made, the word 'Chairman' was used. By virtue of being the Vice-President of the country and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, I can say that a woman can also hold this post. But the Constitution says 'Chairman'," Dhankar said.
Mentioning that this practice was changed under his leadership, in the Rajya Sabha, Dhankar said, "When we take any man or woman in the panel, who sits on my chair and runs the House, we do not call him Chairman, we say, Panel of Vice-Chairperson."
The Vice President said that strong women of "vision and scientific temper" were behind Chandrayaan-3, Chandrayaan-2 and Aditya- L1 space missions which brought glory to India.
Dhankar also said that women have to contribute to the growth of the nation since they are "50 per cent of it".
Speaking about having pride in our accomplishments, the Vice President said, "In 2022, India's Per Capita Data Consumption was more than that of the USA and China taken together. Therefore, we must be proud Indians...We have to keep our national interest ahead of anything else. We must take pride in our historic achievements."
On the New Education Policy, Dhankar said, "In the education sector, the New Education Policy, is a turning point, a major milestone, which has evolved after three decades, all stakeholders had to converge. That is why we have new opportunities."
In a message for the girl students, the Vice President said, "Never be under stress. If a good idea comes to you, do not park it in your mind, implement it, do not be afraid of failing. No one has managed to reach the moon for the first time."
