China under radar for ‘aiding military junta’ in Myanmar; urge for accountability made at UNHRC
Mar 21, 2023
Geneva (Switzerland), Mar 21 (ANI): Amid a worsening situation in Myanmar since the 2021 military coup, European Foundation of South Asian Studies research analyst Michela Mutovciev on March 20 in Switzerland’s Geneva chastised China for ‘supporting and arming’ the military junta in Myanmar for the sake of its own ‘geopolitical games’. She further blamed China’s aid of ‘provoking greater violence’ in Myanmar which is ultimately ‘pushing peaceful solution out of reach’. “Particularly concerning, however, is the response of some of Myanmar’s powerful neighbors who seem all too willing to sacrifice the survival of Myanmar as a society for the sake of their own geopolitical games,” Mutovciev said. “China’s support and legitimization for the military regime risks provoking greater violence in Myanmar and pushing any peaceful solution to the conflict out of reach”, she added. “I humbly urge this Council to call out and hold accountable those countries which, through openly supporting, arming, and bankrolling the military junta, contribute to the prevention of this goal”, she further added. The remarks were made at the interactive dialogue with Special Rapporteur on Myanmar during the 52th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.
