‘Era of equating progress with westernisation is behind us’: EAM on rising of suppressed cultures

Nadi (Fiji), Feb 15 (ANI): Calling the era when countries equated progress and modernity with westernization a thing of past, Union External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on February 15 in Fiji said that the cultures, traditions, and languages that were suppressed during the colonial era, are raising their voices back at the global stage. The remark by the Union Minister was made at the 12th World Hindi Conference being held in Fiji. “The era when we equated progress and modernity with westernisation is behind us. Many such languages, and traditions which were suppressed during the colonial era are again raising their voice on the global stage. In such a situation, it is necessary that the world should know about all the cultures and societies,” the Union Minister said. The 12th World Hindi Conference is being held in Fiji’s Nadi which will be conducted from February 15 to 17. Union Minister Jaishankar inaugurated the conference along with Fiji President Ratu Wiliame M Katonivere. The 3-day conference will be jointly co-hosted by India and Fiji.
