Gujarat’s Dairy Sector: A catalyst for rural prosperity and economic growth
Nov 22, 2024
Ruppura village in Gujarat’s Kheda district thrives on dairy farming, with most households engaged in animal husbandry. Small farmers deposit milk in cooperative societies, ensuring quality checks before distribution. Since 1942, Gujarat’s cooperative sector has driven its dairy success, further strengthened under Chief Minister Narendra Modi from 2001 through infrastructure, technology, and women’s empowerment. With 3.6 million members across 18,164 cooperatives, the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) manages 215 million liters of milk daily. Gujarat leads India’s milk production, contributing significantly to the White Revolution, with a CAGR of 4.96%, setting a global benchmark in dairy farming.
