May 04, 2024
Udhampur, (J&K), May 04 (ANI): Tandar village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district is experiencing a remarkable revival in its age-old handloom weaving industry, thanks to a concerted effort spearheaded by skilled artisans and the Government of India's Directorate of Handicrafts and Handlooms. This resurgence, under the “Revival of Languishing Craft Under Karkhandar Scheme,” has breathed new life into the community renowned for its exquisite woolen shawls, stoles, and blankets. Led by Rajesh Kumar, a seasoned Master Trainer Weaver, and bolstered by the provision of power looms by the government, the once-dwindling craft has seen a significant uptick in production, marking a turning point for the artisans. Yet, amidst these strides, weavers like Sanjay Kumar stress the necessity for sustained support to fully revive and safeguard their heritage craft.
