Kashmir’s Sufi poetry, Folk music remain alive through folk singers and spiritual gatherings

Srinagar, Dec 17 (ANI): Traditional folk songs, especially Sufi music, are still very popular especially Sufi music listeners in Srinagar. Kashmir has a rich cultural history of thousands of years and despite modernisation, traditional Sufi poetry, sung by renowned signers of the valley, is getting tremendous response from specific classes of people. Sufi poetry helps people to feel a connection with God and brings peace to those who listen to it. Folk singers in Kashmir play a key role in keeping this tradition alive by performing Sufi poetry at special events called ‘Sufi Mehfils’. Although, younger people are busy with modern technology, many still understand the importance of Sufi poetry and attend these special gatherings. People who know the value of Sufi poetry are always attending special gatherings called ‘Chhakker’ or ‘Chakri’.
