Transport workers protest in Nepal, properties worth millions vandalized

Kathmandu (Nepal), Feb 14 (ANI): Shattered glasses lying on floor, empty shelves which use to host mobile phones on display, boxes of mobile accessories lying on the ground explain the extent of violence and damage that took place on Monday. As per shopkeepers the protest of transport workers turned violent in New Buspark area of Kathmandu city during the evening. The agitating transportation operators have demanded they should be allowed to park anywhere in absence of organized bus stations. Accessing the extent of damage done by the protestors, the shop owners too held demonstrations at the same location but they were stopped by the Police. Shop owners complain that the Police was in support of vandalisers. The agitating parties argue that the new traffic rules are not in the interest of public transportation. As per the new rules, the traffic police in the valley have been charging fines of 1500 Nepali Rupees for traffic rule violations, up from 500 Nepali Rupees for the first-time offense. The transport entrepreneurs also complained that the traffic police have been charging fines even for parking their vehicles on the roadside, which they say is too much of a burden.
